Worship

Tuesday, February 03, 2015 View Comments Comments (0)

Lately I’ve seen a pattern going on in the church and throughout the worship community.  When it comes to worship,  we seem to have narrowed it down to a certain style, a certain structure, even to the way it’s played, missing the point of what worship is, and why we do it.  Don’t get me wrong…I enjoy the sounds and all the new songs that are being written today, but I never want that to become the focus of what worship is about.

 Worship isn’t a “ Style”

As a kid I was blessed to have the opportunity to travel with my family and sing in many different churches throughout my teenage years. I guess you could say that our “Style” would have been southern gospel.  As we traveled, there were two things that I always noticed…First, at every potluck lunch we would eat at, there was always a bucket of KFC that I could count on; and second, many of the churches had different styles of music.  What I learned is that it’s ok to have a style that you prefer, but it’s not going to make or break the purpose of our worship and to whom our worship is directed!  If we minimize worship to a certain style, than we will certainly minimize how great, and how big, our God is.

Psalm 100

1.    Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth
2.    Worship the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs.

Worship isn’t about YOU

How many times have we left church only to complain “ I didn’t get anything out of that”, or  “ I wish they would sing more of the songs I like”, or “ I don’t think the preacher should say things like that in his sermon”.  I’m as guilty as the next person! But the truth is, worship isn’t about getting anything. It’s about giving everything to God. When we leave acting and saying those types of things, it only means that we didn’t come open and prepared to receive what God had ready for us.

Worship IS all about God

1 Peter 2:9 says:

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.

We are created to worship God, it’s a natural response to who He is and all He has given us, including eternal life.  It also deepens the love and relationship between you and your heavenly Father. So if you have a need to be closer to God, then put Him first!

Worship IS a way of life

Romans 12:1-2

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

To put it simply, live for Jesus! From the moment you wake up till the moment you fall asleep, make Jesus a priority. So many of us think that worship is what you do before the preacher speaks, but that is only a small part of what worship is. What you do and how you live outside of the church walls will tell a lot about who you are and how you worship.  Everyone knows that old saying, “ You gotta walk the walk if you talk the talk”.  Well? Do ya? It’s that simple.  Does your life match the worship you sing on Sunday morning?  Worship is putting Jesus above all else.

So to sum up this blog, I will leave you with this challenge:

1.    Step outside the box of your favorite “Style” of worship
2.    Worship with an open heart
3.    Live out the worship that you have on Sunday morning, Monday thru Saturday!
